Senior Estimator – North American Operations

To support, operational growth and the Estimating Group, Forbes Bros is currently recruiting a full-time, self-directed, and service-minded Senior Estimator for our North American operations.

The Senior Estimator is an experienced Estimator with expertise in powerline transmission, distribution, and/or substation scopes of work. This individual has the knowledge and skills required to prepare and review detailed cost estimates for bids, change orders, and/or projects. The Senior Estimator is responsible for leading quantity take-offs, analyzing costs, and preparing competitive estimates based on a detailed review of scope documentation and analysis of historical data. Additionally, the Senior Estimator will mentor junior Estimators with: best practices for the estimating database, preparing quantity take-offs, understanding and costing scope items, and leveling subcontractor services and materials pricing included in each estimate.

This role can be based in Canada or the US, with flexible work arrangements, for candidates that are able to and willing to work remotely. Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure Forbes’ ongoing effort to improve workplace safety is carried out in the office and on-site visits
  • Prepare detailed, accurate cost estimates inclusive of all scope items
  • Maintain labor and equipment rates in estimating databases
  • Review and level subcontractor/suppliers quotes for accurate comparison
  • Analyze client request for proposal and scope of work documents, specifications, and drawings to determine contractual and technical requirements for estimate preparation
  • Prepare complete estimates for bids and projects consisting of quantity take-off, pricing, and presentation of the estimate for management review
  • Ensure subcontractor/supplier pricing is compared and identify any scope gaps
  • Perform quantity take-offs for all aspects of the estimate while ensuring the estimate is well notated for hand-over to the project team
  • Monitor and track costing of ongoing projects including the comparison of labor and equipment rates within the estimating database
  • Analyze cost data from historical projects for continuous improvement and accuracy of current estimates
  • Prepare budgetary estimates based on historical data
  • Share expertise with the estimating team in an ongoing effort to develop and recommend revisions to the process
  • Prioritize and plan workload to ensure all proposal deadlines are met
  • Additional related duties as assigned
  • Continue review and improvement of Forbes estimating processes (i.e., streamline actual cost data evaluation and support cost estimate database standardization)
  • Meet estimating goals established for the year

Preferred Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and /or Construction Management or related field with a minimum of 10 years work experience in the construction industry
  • Cost estimating and construction experience
  • Working knowledge and experience working within Hard Dollar
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Visio, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Communicates effectively (written and verbal) with the estimating team, all levels of management, and industry contacts
  • Proven ability to adapt to a changing environment and handle multiple priorities with strict deadlines
  • Understanding of sub-scopes and sub-trades
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Highly effective at building and maintaining positive relationships with clients/vendors and colleagues
  • A self-motivated individual that requires minimal supervision and possesses a goal and team-oriented attitude
  • Ability to coach and mentor

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

This position requires candidates to:

  • Occasionally requires extended hours and possible weekend work to meet bid submission deadlines
  • Travel to the regional or corporate offices as required
